i'm not very knowledgeable of the 50mm, 1.4, but I'm also in the market for one and will be adding one to my lens collection, soon. I'm a Nikon loyalist and I always assume that a Nikon lens is the best lens to buy for a Nikon camera. I always worry about TOTAL compatibility. I want all of my camera and lens features to work properly. I've also considered buying the lenses of other manufactures. So, i'm looking forward to hearing what others have to say about this matter, also.

Just to help you all in your eternal search for the best.. Go to Google and type something like "Sigma 50mm 1.4 vs Nikon 50mm 1.4" and take a look at the results. Pretty much every review that puts two lenses head to head will respond to "vs" or "versus" as a webs search.

Here's one I made earlier:

http://www.google.com/search?q=sigma...BOjj4QSt8IntDQ

By the way, I've got the Nikon 1.4D and it's good, but not as good as I thought it would be wide open. That could be me being bad of course, the depth of field is so shallow it's difficult to get the focussing spot on. To be honest, if I were going to buy again, I'd consider getting an F1.8 for less money.

Thanks, I've also been considering the 1.8. It's a lot cheaper and the user reviews are good.

I've read that the Sigma 50 1.4 is better than the Nikkor lens in many ways. I've used the Nikkor one myself for a few weddings, and while it's a nice lens, I can't speak of it the way many speak of the Sigma.

I'd just pick up a 50mm 1.8D for $100 which has held its value for the past 10 years. Third party dont hold their value. If you feel later on that you need to upgrade to a 1.4, you can sell the 1.8D for close to what you paid for it.

I went from the 1.8D to the 1.4D and was fairly disappointed. 1.4 is way to soft and i ended up shooting at the same aperture as I did before with similar results but 3x the price. I happened to come across a crazy deal on a 1.4G and picked it up, but i would be just as happy with a 1.8D or 1.8G.
