Default flash....

D3100 i just use the pop up. I'm buying a flash and a few stands. My question is: does the flash remote trigger the shutter? i've just started looking at this....what tail wags the dog?

If I'm understanding you correctly:

The shutter remote triggers the flash.

Wait wait wait. What shutter trigger and what flash trigger are we talking about?

I use my flash triggers as shutter triggers, too.

I have cheap radio triggers (Yongnuo RF-602s) for off-camera flash triggering. Because the shutter release circuit and the flash sync circuit are both simple shorts, the same remote signal can be used for either. I take one set of Tx/Rx units, set them to one channel, and use the Tx as a remote, and the Rx is hooked via a small cable up to the cable release port of the camera. That's my remote shutter. I take another set of Tx/Rx units, have them set on a different channel, and put the Tx on the camera hotshoe, and the other Rxs onto my flashes, and those are for triggering the off-camera lights.

Cactus V5s, PocketWizards, and most radio triggers can be used the same way.

The Yongnuo 603s, apparently, you only need one unit on-camera, as apparently it can do double duty as the Tx for the flashes and the Rx for the shutter remote simultaneously, but I've never had any to play with to see how it works.

Since wireless triggers weren't mentioned I figured the question regarded the standard camera remote or the D3100's commander mode....

You can still use the built-in flash as a commander, IF and only IF, the flashes you are buying have a SLAVE mode built-in. The Yongnuo YN-460-II can be set this way and take commands from a flash behind it.
