Default D3100 wireless remotes....

i may just get a simple plug in remote and save a few bucks but as i upgrade to FX format (eventually) i'd like to buy some equipment (flash, light stands, tripod, FX lenses maybe, etc.) that i can just buy once and carry with me through equipment upgrades. I'm researching remotes the first several seem to fit into the hot shoe of the camera. How does that affect flash usage?

It will take away your ability to shoe mount a flash and in most cases prevent your pop up flash from fully extending.

ok. what's on top of the camera in the hot shoe? The commander? Thats fine - your wireless remote will fire the camera and the commander will fire the OCF.

I use the Nikon ML-3 wireless remote for my D300 and it works very well. It plugs into the 10 pin remote on the front of the camera. The wireless part can either fit on the hot shoe, or left to dangle, as I have done on occasion. I have used the "trigger" part up to about 20 feet away. Don't know if that is max distance or I was stretching it. Seemed to work well. Also used it when tripod mounted so no vibration. Not sure which Nikons it is compatible with though-
