You are correct though, until we see some real world photo's all this is best guess.
The D3s is still clean at 6400, and there's also some of that "if you can't get good images with a D3s, then it isn't the camera's fault" going on too.

Bought the d700 today (prepaid - expected in a week or two)

From what I've read the D3S still handles low light better than the D4.

I don't need the 36 from the D800 and again it won't handle low light as well.

As far as I can tell the D700 is 95% of what the D3S is at 1/2 the cost so that's what I went with.

So the d700 came in but I told them to keep it and paid the extra for the d800

Hope we'll see the rumoured $500 price decrease on the d700 next month and then I'll buy it too ahah
