They will default to AF-S.

and look at the M&Ps over the gen4 Glocks... most people think the m&p point better - certainly point more like a 1911 if your transitioning from that platform...
Thanks for all the help, you guys are always great at listening and giving opinionated but well stated information.

P.S. I'll get a gen 3 glock probably, i'm more familiar with it, and just holding in my hand i liked the glock better, other thought was the ruger SR9 but i have a friend with a dealers licence so a G3 G17 is only $465...

glock over the ruger is the right decision.
M&P will run about the same money and your bud s/b able to order it. Just like with a camera, go to the store and get each one in your hands and see how they feel. The triggers on both are easy to upgrade but the M&P trigger mods seem to break more cleanly while the glocks are kinda spongy. ymmv. And I am not trying to disparage the G17 - it is a fine, time proven weapon, just suggesting positive alternatives.
