Default 50mm 1.8D vs. 50mm 1.8G

I know this has been asked and answered many times, but I need to know the difference between the D and G on prime lenses?

D reports the distance back to the camera. G is a D lens without an aperture ring.

Generally speaking, D lenses are older in design than G lenses. The G lenses most typically have been updated with AF-S as well, which becomes an issue if you have an entry-level Nikon (e.g., D3100, D5100) and want a lens that autofocuses.

Either one will work. The D will be louder focus, but is also a little cheaper. I own the D -- it was the first prime I purchased and have been very happy with it. Prob the most owned prime out there.

The G also has some optical differences: it's better. It's also slightly larger.

I have not really been able to see that much difference in practice, although I have not used the G much. What have you been able to discern as the difference? Do you feel it is significant enough to consider an upgrade?

Everybody's tolerances on image quality are different. This is one of those times when test data might help you decide. To my eye, it looks like the contrast and CA control on the G version is better.

The D suits most of my needs. I'm not much of a pixel peeper though.
