Default Best Nikon body

hello, i'm going to be getting a secondary camera for emergencies, I want to get another Nikon body for under $900. What would be the best contender? I currently have a Nikon d90.

Considering your budget...just get another D90.

Best is a relative term...but for a little more $, a refurb D7000 would be a good choice

I think if you get a D7000, the D90 will be relegated to backup role.....

There is nothing that the D90 has the D7000 can't do better...

Well I went out and bought one. I'm just waiting for it to be delivered. I heard that they have a tendency to overexpose. Has anyone experienced this?

I love my D7000 and have entertained the notion to get a second but now with the A77 I might be going Sony soon. Having a two system kit is not my first choice but I love the resolution in the a77. I might wait to see if Nikon does the smart thing and get sony's 24.3 sensor and put it in a new D7000s or D8000 or whatever number designation they want to use.

Have to disagree with you: 24mp on a DX sensor isn't a smart thing.

Grab a A77 and test it out.....the resolution is fantastic. I do not do a lot of high ISO shooting....when I do night shots or low light I use a tripod. It depends on what you want it for but for commercial work the larger you can print the better off you are. 24mp sensor is perfectly fine on DX sensor it depends on the use.
I agree with you if you need higher ISO's but if you can stay under 1600 the A77 is great! Not to mention the fact it comes with a 16-50mm 2.8 as a kit lens!
Nikon will go with a large MP sensor soon and it makes sense that this will be it and now there is no better time to do it. .....
Saying its not a smart thing is like saying a race car is not a smart thing....you can't generalize it like that.

Oh believe me, I've tried the a77 (and the NEX7, for that matter). I wouldnt touch them above 800iso (they barely compare to my D300s at 1600), and above that... no thanks. Even at low ISO, you need the absolute best lenses to get anything meaningful out of them; In Sony mount, those are either hard to come by, or ridiculously expensive.

Even as a Nikon body, or Nikon-mount body, you get similar issues: the only lenses capable of resolving 24mp on that size sensor are crazy expensive.

Canon was pushing things at 18mp, and frankly it shows a bit with anything but top-shelf glass.
