Just wondering which primes you guys carry in your bag??? Right now im stuck on the 20mm and the 24mm 2.8's, I already have the 85mm 1.8 and id like to get one other prime not including the 20/24. Any advice? And those of you who have shot both the 20 and 24, which did you like more, and why? Note, they're going to be used on Nikon DX format camera
Thanks! |

My primes are: 10.5mm, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8 and 105mm f/2.8. I don't have anything at the low ends because that's where I start going with ultrawide zooms. Every once in a while I think a 24mm might be nice, but I haven't decided it's something I need just yet. In any case, those are the primes I have. My most used has probably been my 50mm, followed by my 105mm. My most used at the moment is the 10.5mm because it's new.
![]() I think if you're considering a 24mm, you might consider evening things out with a 50mm because then you've got 20/24, 50, 85. Of course, it also depends what you want to shoot. You might consider yourself better off with something longer. From what you've said I can't really make that call.

I have the 50/1.8D, 50/1.4G, 45/2.8P and 24/2.8D, but the only one I carry regularly is the 50/1.4.

Yeah im probably going to get the 50 1.8d because its so cheap and awesome but im still torn between the 20/24. As for what im shooting. A little bit of everything. Its to bring on a 5 month backpacking trip... So i have my short tele in the 85, the nifty 50 turned 75mm, and then one of the 20's for more all purpose shooting, tight street stuff. My other question would be, would a 24 on a dx be wide enough for landscape shooting, or am i now just in normal focal length territory? i.e. 24 becomes 36mm on crop sensor.

50 f/1.8D, 40 f/2.8 G Micro, 24 f/2.8 AI-S
The 50 gets used as a portrait lens at times, but is most often left in the bag or if I need wider-angle and shallow DoF. It also gets used on film. The 40 is a macro lens used on digital primarily for macro but also for walkaround stuff. The 24 is used only on film as a wide-angle lens.

Advice on another prime - not sure, since you're shooting on a crop body - you may find the 50mm a good focal length - and you might consider the 60mm macro instead - it depends so much on how you want to shoot. I love 20 / 35 / 85 as a 3 lens kit, but for full frame. I'd advise a wider prime than 20 - but the choices are slim, i think 14mm might be the only wider prime that's largely available - on a crop body it would make more sense to go to a superwide zoom - but I'm biased because I like shooting wide. I've not really had much experience with the 24 2.8 - so, there's not much I can say about it |

Start in the middle with an inexpensive 50mm 1.8D. It suits many, but after a while you'll know if you need to go longer or shorter.
