Default Nikon 70-300mm ED AF-S VR Lens

I just purchased this lens a notice two issues: 1) there is a click in the lens after the shutter release. I turned off the VR and the click disappears so I believe it is the VR technolgy resetting or making some other adjustment. I read a review and it mentioned something about noise with the lens, and I was wondering if anyone else with this lens has experienced this situation. I do not believe the lens is grey market as I purchased it at Best Buy and I registered in on line a Nikon without any probems.

The VR system makes several sounds: there is a distinct *click* noise when the VR system engages/disengages. This will happen when you press the shutter release half way to focus (activates the VR system) and once again when the VR system disengages (either after a few seconds of not holding the shutter button down or after a frame). Between the two clicks you'll hear a slight humming that almost sounds like a running faucet coming from the lens: this is the VR system at work.

All these sounds are totally normal.

Hello Troutwhisperer, I am new here, II have a Nikon D5000 and use that same lens (Nikor 70-300mm f.4-5.6) I purchased the lense from from Target when it was on sale. I too believe what you are describing is Normal, I would not be concerned, maybe you are just sensitive to these sounds. I wear two hearing aids and actually I hear all kind of sounds , but have never had a problem with that lens. As long as nothing feels loose, I would not worry , I know if you have the VR switch turned on and you are packing or unpacking the lense it will rattle a bit, however II always try to remember to turn off those switches on the lens.

T Graham.
