You can adjust the automatic sensor cleaning setting in the setup menu.

It may not show it on the screen: you will find that the camera "buzzes" or "vibrates" when it happens.

Hi sorry to be a nuisance but I have checked with the manual and it does not say anything about if it should show it when it is switched off/on. I have also listened and had hold of the camera to feel it vibrate or if it buzzes but nothing happens, is there anyone with a D5100 who can tell me if this normal or do i need to do something else. Thank you once again for all your replies

It is normal. I know exactly what you mean. The Nikon D60 (my first body) was like that. Everytime I was turning it off there was a screen saying the sensor was beeing cleaned.

I don't get that message when I turn off my D90. And you know what, I not even sure it physically does it everytime I'm turning off my camera. Do be bothered by those things. It's not a malfunction. It's the way Nikon designed the camera.
