It could definitely be interesting if they decide to use an APS-C sized sensor. Not to mention if it's compatible with present Nikkor mounts.

If not I don't know that I'd get much more excited for it over an existing micro four-thirds system.

I'm a spec-girl. Give me the numbers and a review, and maybe I'll get excited, but I need to know more than that it's made by Nikon. I mean, I had high hopes for Pentax getting into the mirrorless compact arena, and then they delivered the Q. (sigh).

It's also going to be really tough for Nikon to deliver something suitably distinct (and better) than Sony NEX or micro four-thirds at this point, particularly with the lead the other systems have in lenses.

While adapting SLR lenses to a mirrorless compact is something a great many people do, I'm mostly intrigued in the promise of smaller size/weight that the mirrorless compacts offer. Putting a dSLR lens on one would not be advantageous for that. And then there's the focus motor thing, and the fact that Nikon might not put in-body stabilization into their mirrorless compact.

Time enough to see when the announcement (whatever the I is that "am comings" ) happens tomorrow.

Unfortunately, everything i've seen and heard, points to Nikon going with a sensor that fits well between bridgecameras and the micro-four thirds sized sensor, with almost a 3x crop factor.

Will be interesting to see how well they deliver, and what they do about wide angle on it - the first 4 available lenses will say alot. I really doubt it's gonna get me out of my micro four thirds investment.

No thanks. It seems the biggest point is smaller size and that doesn't appeal to me.

The sensor seems to be smaller than a 4/3 system. Because of this it isn't for me either.

Blehhh...
I agree with dpreview's take, it makes sense for them not to make a camera that can conceivably compete quality-wise with their DSLR line, but still, having a sensor smaller than micro four-thirds pretty much just makes me want to go after a Lumix or Olympus if I want a MILC.

The fact that they'll have an F-mount adapter will be interesting, but as inkista points out, there's a disadvantage to mounting a dSLR lens on a camera whose main attraction is to be more compact and portable. Not to mention that personally I don't have any Nikon glass, so it's basically a non-incentive to me.

Their hybrid phase/contrast detect autofocus should be a good feature, at least.

But no built-in flash, no standard hotshoe, just the higher-end model has a proprietary port presumably for a proprietary flash add-on. People with Nikon glass and people needing a compact that focuses quickly (assuming the claim pans out) will probably be more interested than I. Were I in the market, I'd probably vastly prefer something like the PEN E-P3.
