The extra cost of the 18-200 will allow you to carry only 1 lenses and cover a large range. This is probably the main advantage of this lens. It's very popular amongs travellers /walkaround lens for this particular reason. Optically speaking, the 55-200 is a little bit sharper. You trade a little bit of picture quality for convinience. But it's not like you will not be able to take nice pictures with the 18-200, and this can be corrected via post-production (software).
Have you considered the 55-300 ? It's a fairly new lens and the extra reach could be interesting.

I agree with Shokinen. If you end up leaning towards the 55-200, get the 55-300 instead.

Depends on you and what you shoot. My parents hated the 50mm 1.8D and hated changing lenses so the 18-200 VR was perfect for them.
I sold them my 18-200mm bc for $600 I'd much rather have a flash, good prime, and a fast midrange zoom.

The 70-300 is a much better and sharper lens, but costs more money -- tradeoff.

Hello, I chose to go with the 55-200mm vr lens. Its light and really sharp, Nikon had them refurbished for $149.00!!!!! Excellent deal i couldn't pass up. They also have the 18-200mm but i didn't see the price. With the money you save you could also get a 35mm 1.8 lens for low light. You did not say what you photograph most often. If its nature and wildlife, the 55-300mm is a better choice and will give you more magnification. If you shoot people and events the 55-200mm is compact and light and might be better. The 70-300mm VR is supposed to have really fast auto focus unlike the 55-200 VR which is slower than the 18-55mm VR you already have, so if you do a lot of sports the 70-300 VR may be the best all around choice for you. Hope this helps!
