Default Looking for a new Nikon! Recommendations??

I currently have a Nikon D3000, and I'm really discovering that I am in need of an update, although I love it so much. I'm definitely staying with Nikon, but am open to other suggestions. Please help! The D5100 looks really nice, but should I step it up and go for the D90? Or really hold out for the D7000 or D300s?? HELP!

Why do you need a new camera? How do you feel limited by the D3000? This will dIctate your upgrade.

What lenses do you already have? What do you shoot? What mode do you typically shoot in? Would you consider buying used?

(hint: after Christmas everyone sells their cameras after they upgrade, prices drop in the saturated market)

I own a Nikon D 90 and D 7000. I bought the D 7000 as a backup for the D 90 but with all the features of the D 7000, the D90 has become the backup. A friend of mine that sells wedding photos and other events for a living uses a D 5000 and was impressed with all the D7000 has to offer. I would suggest reading books published especially about the D 3000 and experiment more. You may find it has many capabilities you didn't know possible. Then upgrade to a D7000 but use the D 3000 as a backup. I usually have different lenses on my two cameras for good coverage of anything I come across and carry them with me constantly.

I say hold off until September's over to see what the new Nikon dSLR announcement(s) are gonna be. Nobody's expecting Nikon to refresh the entry levels (they're looking for a D4, a D800, or a D400. Maybe a mirrorless compact), but you never know, and it's only a few weeks away. After the new cameras appear, the landscape may have changed a bit. If the D90 has a successor (long shot), that could change your plans.

And of course- why you think it need an update could give some hints as to what camera you want to go to - or if perhaps lenses may be a better investment.

Lenses are, in most cases, a better investement especially when you are starting.

What are you currently using ?

Isn't the D7000 in essence a successor to the D90? they don't even have it in their line up anymore.

I'll have to go with a big fat +1 on this. I am using a D40 and an ancient D70. I bought the D70 just to have something that would AF with the glass I had. I have by no means hit the wall with my bodies yet, so that will be a last thought for new gear for me, unless they totally crap out and quit working.

I traded from a d3000 to a d90. They say the technology is "obsolete" but it was what I wanted for numerous reasons, not the least of which was the "in body" focus. If you want to buy used however, like the other folks said, there will be some good deals coming up.
