I can't believe a little piece of glass is so expensive. This is some wild engineering!
Nikon 58mm f/1.2 Noct-NIKKOR check out the comparison photos for night photography.

I have a friend who's still a little ambivalent about having to let his go to fund his D700 and FX lenses. It's a legendary lens.
But there are others, like the Canon EF 50mm f/1.0L USM, the Leica M Noctilux, the old Canon-S rangefinder 50mm f/0.95, and the CV Nokton 25mm f/0.95 for micro four-thirds. And you could easily pick up a 55/1.2 if you wanted. Not as nice, obviously, as the 58 Noct, but then not as expensive and still f/1.2. f/1.2 for shooting "available dark" is fun. ![]() Canon 5Dii, adapted Olympus Zuiko SMC 50mm f/1.2 Auto-S. iso 3200, f/1.2, 1/125s. handheld.

The NOCT 58mm is better wide open and has better coma control in the corners. It was designed for astrophotography.
