My friend has a Nikon 35mm film camera and wants to know if her lenses will fit the Nikon DSLR's.

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Mostly, but double check. Is it Autofocus? Then yes, no problems at all, except that the lower tier bodies (D40/40x/60/3000/5000/3100/5100) wont autofocus with most older AF lenses (only AF-I and AF-S). If it's not autofocus, then it gets tricky and depends on the lens.

You have to know the lens type. AI, AI-S, any AF lens should mount without causing harm. Lenses earlier than AI may have a clearance issue with one of the metering prongs and attaching the lens can damage the prong.

Best way I know to tell what's what is to look here: Nikon Lens Serial Nos

Find your exact lens, check the SN and see what it says for type in the left most column.

This is the prong where the conflict occurs. The picture shows one of my old 55mm Micro lenses on a D90 body. The lens rim has been filed to clear the prong.. If the rim wasn't modified it would push the prong down into the camera body when it's mounted. Of course this becomes a full manual operation on the D100 or lesser bodies.

Here you can see the area cut to clear the prong while mounting the lens..

The later lenses that will mount without needing to be modified have a meetering prong on the outside back rim of the lens that looks something like this (the prong on the outer rim, not the one on the inside):

The 50/1.8 D will mount and meter but will not autofocus on a D3100. Of the two, I'd go for the 35/1.8 AF-S, manual focus using the viewfinders Nikon puts on its consumer cameras is not much fun.
