Question Compatible battery for D3100/D5100 - EN-EL14

First i am in the UK

I am looking for a spare battery for my D3100 , but the original is £35-50 pounds , and it`s a lot of money for me, I bought the D3100 because it is excellent value, I would love an original, because third party battery can be of poor quality and also be dangerous.

There are lots of third part EN-EL14 battery's out there, but it seems the D3100 can tell if the battery is not a original , must be a chip inside or something.

I suppose with the amount of people buying the D3100/D5100 , there will be a third part compatible battery made eventually.

Thanks for any help

John.

I've had good luck buying aftermarket batteries on eBay from Hong Kong in the past for my Nikons. Just make sure they specify that it will work in your camera and that they will give you a refund if it does not.

Whats wrong is that the D5100 doesnt come with a grip AT ALL. You cant compare the battery grip options for 2 different cameras if one doesnt even have a battery grip available. That's like comparing a house and a car on their abilities to get you to work. It doesnt make sense.

If you're looking at AA batteries: they dont last very long. Even shooting photos theyre only good for about a day; shooting video you're looking at very little time indeed.

This is misleading. A D5100 battery (replacement for the original) is $40 (1030mAh). A D7000 battery (replacement for the original) is $50 (1900mAh). Comparing based entirely on the battery "capacity" (which is a TERRIBLE term) is faulty: yes, the mAh rating is general indication of how much power the battery can output over time, it does NOT equate directly to how long that battery will last. I dont know where you got this idea; maybe you're not explaining yourself adequately, but it simply doesnt add up.

Besides, if you're using the battery the camera came with as one battery and a spare as a second battery, you'll be recharging one while using the other. The battery will recharge faster than you can use the other one. As such, a D7000 battery will cost $10 more for a single spare, which is really all you'll need to work; You dont need to match mAh ratings to get any kind of equivalency.

ccting: You get hung up on numbers very easily, and obsess about them. If you're going to talk authoritatively about something, at least know what you're talking about.
