Question Nikon 105MM MICRO-F2.8 AIS FIT - Good?

Hi,

Recently I had asked for opinions on prime lens and based on that I was researching for a good deal. I cam across a used Nikon 105MM MICRO-NIKKOR F2.8 AIS FIT from London Camera Exchange available for GBP 299.

It got me thinking and just wanted to ask for your views as most the users here are much more experienced in photography then me....

1) Is is worth?
2) Will it work on my D90 ?
3) If I decide to buy it, what should I look for in terms of quality and condition. I have never purchased second hand lens....

Thanks in advance for your help...

Regards
PShah

Should work fine, but try haggling them down a bit

Thank you very much for your response, will try and see how much lower can I get them to sell. Also, can you please tell me any specific areas in which I should look out for problems.

Look through the lens without it mounted to a camera with the aperture wide open and look at a light. If you see any lines or things on the glass, avoid it.

Hi,

I went to the store and he advised me that the lens would not meter on my camera. If I understand this correctly, this means that I would have to use it in manual mode and dial in the exposure. Am I correct?

Is there any way around this?

That sounds about right. Why not just take your camera in and try the damned thing?

Thank you once again for taking some of your precious time to help me out. I have tried it on my camera and it works, however, I am not that comfortable in dialling in the exposure values manually. So far I have been taking pictures in Aperture Priority.

The reason why I reposted my query, was to know of any way in which I could still make the lens work on my camera so that I can still keep on using the semi auto mode on my camera...

I understand your trepidation with regard to going outside of your comfort zone. But you will not grow your technical and creative skills unless you do so. Make mistakes, it is the way we learn.

it really isnt that hard, if you understant DOF to f/stops, it is just a matter of trying a few different shutter speeds till your happy. Make sure you have the highlights turned on with your playback this will show you any blown out areas, it helps. If you think about it you probaly know it already, Small f/ stop is a larger aperture so you need less light and faster shutter speed, the higher the f/stop the slower the shutter speed. Use your current lenses in maual mode on your camera it will be the same thing and see if you can master it, I had to do it when i got my lensbaby it doesn't take long to pick up.

Thank you very much for the encouragement, however, as I was still not comfortable with the manual settings, I thought I would still learn a bit more about the camera and composition and then venture into manual settings. Thus, I have decided to postpone my purchase for a macro lens and instead bought a 50 mm 1.8D.

Thank you once again for all your suggestions and help.
