Default Best macro lens for Nikon D90?

I'm on a budget, so I'd prefer it to be under RM1500. (I live in Malaysia)

So far the one I've seen and liked is Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro.

The lens will be used take close up shots of water droplets, flowers, possibly a few insects, etc as well, so something from 90mm or more would be nice. What is your opinion on the Tamron, or are there any other lenses would you recommend?

My friend, Macro and close up are not the same thing. You have to look at the magnification ratio of the lens in question. There a hundred if not more threads on Macro and close up lens choices. Oh, by the way welcome to DPS and thank you for wanting to be a member of our community. We like to have people from all over the world as it really makes the site better. Now back to the choices. I did a Google search of this site only and came up with 396 threads for you to view. Here is the link: Macro and close up lenses for the Nikon DX format camera. Please peruse these links and see if you have more questions after this.

In my opinion the best Macro lens for DX format is to be found at this link: Nikon Micro lens options

For close up work the 50-1.4 or 1.8 are good but not best. It all depends upon where you wish to go with your photography. As to your budget, it will limit your choices considerably and in that price range the Tamron will make pretty good photographs as long as you work within the constraints of the lens.

Hope this helps you.

Jim

personally I am using a Tokina 35mm f/2.8 macro lens. It can pull a focus from less than 1 inch away. I prefer this for my macro work because I shoot a lot of food photography and that means I am usually limited on space. I have done macro work with a longer lens, but it just didn't work as well for what I was doing and the way I had to do it. I do the food photography live in the restaurants for a restaurant review in a local paper. Not easy to get the space needed while seated at a restaurant booth or the like. Easier to just get up close and personal with the food.

Hi, i used to use a 50mm with extention tubes but found it to restrictive with bugs as you have to get up so close, now have the 90mm tamron luv it. Reviews i found put it up there with the nikon 105mm lense but oh so much cheaper. Will say it can hunt a bit for focus at times in auto but for some one starting out with macro and on a budget to me it is the way to go and would highly recomend it. Have a few pic on my flickr page if you would like a look at what it can do, im no expert but will give you an idear.
