I have been enjoying DPS for a few months now. The wonderful tutorials and forum community make this web site a joy to visit.
In the coming weeks/months I plan on becoming a more active member; perhaps, even joining in on some of the challenges. I am currently shooting with Canon EOS Rebel XSI Amazon.com: Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black): Camera & Photo With the stock 18-55mm lense. I also have the 55 - 250mm. Amazon.com: Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer Telephoto Zoom Lens: Electronics I am now able to upgrade cameras and have done a bit of research. After reading reviews from dpreview and here I am trying to decide between the Nikon D5100 or the D7000. I am going to purchase these lenses as well as the 50mm static lense with f1.8 for low light photography and some portrait shooting. Amazon.com: Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon Mount Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics Amazon.com: Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo I primarily shoot architecture, including some urban exploration shots and portraits. However I am also a fan of day tripping for nature pictures and night photography. I normally do not take many action shots unless I am just out with friends or have a special request. Currently, any post production I do is in Gimp until I can purchase photoshop through my schools discount. I am having a hard time deciding between the two cameras (D5100 and D7000) and would love any opinions or statements on this purchase. Also if you have any opinions on lenses that would compliment the camera better than the ones I have listed I would love to know. Thank you for taking the time to read and I look forward to learning with all of you in the future. Chris |

Why are you switching from Canon to Nikon? Just curious.
If you're going for the D5100 and D7000, look at whether you need A) the in-body focus motor, B) faster FPS shooting and/or C) the commander flash for SB units. If you need any of those, then the D7000 will be a better bet. If not, then the D5100 would be better as it's cheaper, smaller, lighter.

I'll be honest, I have nothing against Canon. In my opinion the brand is not as important as the performance. During my time looking I haven't seen a recent camera release that impressed me like the D7000. This is a serious purchase and one I am not taking lightly since I don't plan on upgrading again for a while. So any opinions are very welcome.
I am looking over the differences you listed and greatly appreciate it. Last edited by HiddenLane; 05-26-2011 at 10:27 PM. |
