I have a nikon d5000 and have been looking for a good lens for some time now and i'm itching to just buy one but i want to make sure its a good choice. i'm just looking for a new lens and won't be using this for anything but simply to be taking pictures of my life.
nikon 24-70mm or sigma 24-70mm? I don't know exactly how different they are. but i've seen great reviews on both and i really just can't decide. :/ also, the nikon is more expensive so there's a bit more of a lean towards that sigma lens. so if anyone has some advice or maybe pros/cons of either lens that would be great. |

I had a Sigma 24-70 and found the focus somewhat soft. I replaced it with a Nikon 24-70 which is a much sharper lens. Just one question, what do you plan to take pictures of with this lens. I found that on a DX body it was not wide enough for wide shots nor long enough for long shots. I guess it all depends on your shooting style.

Do you even have to ask this question? You know its the Nikon 24-70. Had mine for over a year and love it, it focus really fast and crazy sharp. I switched from tamron 17-50 2.8. You get what you pay for.

There's no need to belittle the OP. It's a legitimate question.

As a student with baby #1 on the way, the Nikon is out of the question.
I'm unhappy with the range on my 17-50mm 2.8 and would like to get either the sigma 24-70 2.8 DG EX or tamron 28-75mm 2.8 XR LD. I read some reviews of both and understand the sigma has a better (heavier) build and smoother focus. However one review said the sigma fully extended at 2.8 was unusable, and the Tammy was very soft at the edges. Anyone here have first hand experience with both or know any reviews that compare the 2? I've seen ones that compare each to the Nikon, but not to each other.

I've had the Sigma for two years and am moving on to the nikon shortly. That said, I've enjoyed the sigma and I don't even have the HSM version. So my .02.. IF you have the money buy the nikon if you don't and want to learn with quality glass buy the sigma.

if you go sigma make sure you get the new model with HSM. From what i have been told sigma has come a long way, not quiet up to nikon quality but a lot closer than in the past. It is still a heavy lense, lighter than the nikon but it can be an issue for some. If you want a lighter lense look at the Tamron, again make sure it is the newest model, it is getting good reviews, it is a plastic body as against metal for the other 2 but value for money it can be a good option.
