The 50mm f/1.8 will indeed give a shallow DoF, but it might be a touch long. If you're looking to do portraits primarily, than it's a pretty good focal length. If you intend on using it a lot indoors or in otherwise small-ish spaces, I'd recommend the 35mm f/1.8. It's a solid lens- costs a bit more than the 50mm f/1.8D, but the 35mm does focus more silently than that 50 and is a 'normal' lens on the cropped sensor bodies like your D90.

Just my two cents. As any of the regulars on the Nikon forum would readily tell you, I absolutely adore my 35mm. It's a gem of a lens.

You can even look for 50mm f/1.8 G, the newer one which is expected to be priced at $219 if you are used to the 50mm working distance. I would agree though with the suggestion given above of using a 35mm.

It won't be around till Late July (and probably somewhat hard to get then). The 50mm f/1.8D is still only half the price.

I love my 50mm. And the best part is that with the D90 you can get the older D version which works perfectly fine (at a lower price than the G versions). I've rarely found the 50mm too long for my liking. If anything at times it's too short. But that's where it comes down to shooting style: what you shoot, where you shoot, how you shoot, etc.
