Revealed, then taken down from the Nikon site, DP Review has the story here: Nikon reveals AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens: Digital Photography Review
Should be a great buy for D40/60/3000/3100/5000/5100 owners with the in-lens focus. What say you? |

Ive been trolling photo news sites all day, this came up and went down in the space of an hour and people were reporting on it immediately.
It'll be interesting, but frankly I dont think it'll sell all that well.

A 50mm 1.8 Prime? With motor? I would bet it would sell as well as the 35mm 1.8, especially if they keep the price reasonable.
I know it will be a fast buy on my part..

Here's the thing: For DX we alreayd have the 35/1.8 AF-S. On FX, all bodies have the built in motor. Unless they plan on replacing the AF-D version with this AF-S version and selling it for a similar price (+ MAX $20) then it might work for anybody moving forward. But if it's any more expensive than that (ie if it hits $200), Nikon have really missed the boat.

The thing is that everybody has been encouraging people to get the 35mm f/1.8 DX for their entry-level bodies because it approximates a 50mm FoV. The 50mm lens on DX, it's said, is an odd focal length.
I got my 50mm f/1.8D because my (at the time) D80 had a focus motor so I never had that problem. The 35mm didn't exist, either. For NIkon to advertise the 50mm AF-S as a replacement for the 50 AF-D, then it'l have to be VERY close to the same price. If it isn't, then it's best to just jump up to the f/1.4 AF-S because the 35 is a pretty decent deal. As for using an AF-S lens on a body with the motor built-in (like the D90 et. al.): on the lower-tier bodies with motors (like the D70, D80, D90, D7000), it'll likely be faster. On higher tier bodies (D200, D300/s, D700, D2 series and D3 series), the built-in motor is VERY fast and accurate. The only advantage would be the sound which, for 90% of users, isn't going to be an issue. And for the people for whom the sound is an issue, they probably already have 50/1.4s.
