That lens is disco and the reviews are not overly positive. Fairly soft in the corners at f2.8

What sort of budget are you working with? What enviroment will it primarly be used in? Indoors vs outdoors and how much space will you have between the camera and the subject.

My first choice in a zoom would be the 17-55 f2.8 for that body or the 70-200 f2.8 (if you have more space), but they sure do come with a price tag

Jeanne, I'm not real familiar with that lens, but after a peek at a few of the review comments I don't think I would buy it. Yes, it has a good focal range for portraits, but again, I'd be skeptical. If you don't mind doing your own zooming a few primes might not be a bad idea. The 50mm, f/1.8 and the 85mm, f/1.8 both fast and decent performers. And, you could probably buy both for about what you'd pay for the 24-85 zoom. Both these lenses will work out well for portrait work outdoors with the 85 being a little tight for some indoor applications.

+1 on the 50mm, I have the 1.4 version but it is a great lense and not overly expensive. I have seen a lot of people that also like the 35mm 1.8 as well.
