Worst case you can use Nikon Transfer to change the name. I know it's not the best solution but maybe something you may want to explore.

thanks guys for your reply, really appreciate it. i guess it is something that i got to deal with it. anyway, anyone here using pro body? because does it means that pro body can do the number thing but not dx body.

i hardly renaming the file after i transferred it to my laptop so i was hoping that my d90 could continue to rename the file after 9999. i usually use number system. right now i encountered problem like two file of the same file name (number).

I can manually change the file prefix DSC with my D3. One could expand the unique numbering system by manually changing it from AAA to 999 (excluding DSC). Maybe you can do the same thing with the D90.
