No, not really. It only has a set number of digits.

Worst case you can use Nikon Transfer to change the name. I know it's not the best solution but maybe something you may want to explore.

No, file names are the same across all the bodies. The camera should create a new folder when the counter turns back over.

Are you renaming the files once you pull them to your computer? What's your file system like?

i hardly renaming the file after i transferred it to my laptop so i was hoping that my d90 could continue to rename the file after 9999. i usually use number system. right now i encountered problem like two file of the same file name (number).

Best practice is to rename the files when you move them over. I use Lightroom to do this as a batch action.

Putting the images in folders for each shoot can help too.

My system:

Rename files on import using this template: customname_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS-sequence#

All images go into a folder named using a similar template: YYYYMMDD_customname

It's impossible to have two images with the same name, and keeping them in separate folders makes it easier to find what I'm looking for.

I can manually change the file prefix DSC with my D3. One could expand the unique numbering system by manually changing it from AAA to 999 (excluding DSC). Maybe you can do the same thing with the D90.
