I got a D60 about 3 years ago and love it, but I'm hitting the limits of what I can do. High iso performance and not having commander mode for the flash (I have a SB600) are the two major complaints I have (although the autofocus motor is sometimes annoying too). I would love to get a full frame since I mostly shoot landscape, cityscape or portraits, but don't think I have the glass to make that the next step.
My wife has also started to get into photography so it would be great to have a second body if we go for a photowalk together, which is what stops me from getting 24-70mm f2.8 (I currently have a 50mm f1.8, 18-55 kit and Sigma 70-300mm), and putting up with the annoyances for a while longer. Right now I have about $2,200 to spend, the best case would be to get the new lens and a body that solves the issues listed above, but the price limits that. I'll probably still look at a full frame when the budget is there, but would you go for a body first to bridge the gap (and if so which), invest in the glass and just keep dealing with the current issues until I can save enough, or a third option I haven't thought of? Thanks for you help! |

D7000 (still DX) and look for a used 28-70 f/2.8. Should be just under your budget.

I'm in the same position as you - except with less money. I think I can put up with my D60 for a bit longer before I will need to upgrade. For the time being, I'm going to upgrade my glass first. I have a fast tele and a macro (my kit lens doesn't count), so I've got quite a few gaps in my lens lineup.
