Default Extended Glass for Nikon D5000

So I am in the mood to buying an extended lens for my Nikon D5000.
I have the kit lens which is 18-55 Nikkor but I also looked at several 55-200 or 70-300 lenses.

Nikon brand is expensive but I have heard Sigma and Tamron are compatible as well... any ideas/suggestions/warnings behind those brand names? And what lens would be feasible.

I have a wedding to shoot and I was thinking it would come in handy. What do you think?

Jason

the D5000 does not have auto focus motor so you have to get a lense that does in nikon that is the AF-S range. The older 70 - 300 G lenses are AF and so wont auto focus. Try to get a lense that has a stabilize built in, it does help with hand held. Tamron lenses look at there SP range they are better quality lenses, some time it is getting the best that you can afford. Have added a Aus site that list all the lenses for nikon with built in motors great quick reference.

Lenses with built-in focusing motor

Go with the 70-300VR its a much better lens, and is an FX lens so will work fine on an FX camera if you ever get one.

+1 on the 70-300 VR

Built quality and optic quality is targeting the serious amateur. VR is very very usefull at that range. ED Glass is a step up and the price is very interesting. I love mine and would buy another one if something was happening to it.

As for the wedding, there's been several post about that subject. Do a search on this forum.

Neither the kit lens nor the 70-300mm will really serve you all that well for weddings though- they're both pretty 'slow' lenses...

AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR from Nikon

I use this lens on D90 and D7000 excellent for extreme closeups and portraits as well as an all around lens. Not too high a price either.
