For what camera? for what purpose? what other gear do you currently have?

Start with the flash. It'll give you more flexibility in what you want to shoot. You can always make the 50mm your next purchase in the future

agree 100%
The most unvalued item in bright light is also a flash. It gives you far more versatility than the 50mm

In that case, the flash. Added bonus: An SB-600 will act as a slave to the D80's commander.

Thanks a ton guys ... will go for a flash ... I might sound dumb (but better asking before investing) which flash do you reckon i should buy SB600 or 800. I am not a professional just a casual hobbyist ...

The obvious answer is the SB800 if you can swing it. More power, zooms to 105mm vs 85mm giving you further range and has some more bells and wistles like CLS commander mode etc. You have to decide wether the money is worth the added benefits to you. Here is a comparison chart:

Nikon CLS - SB-600 vs SB-800 0vs SB-900

I could be wrong, but not sure if the SB800 can still be bought new?? But that doesn't mean you probably couldn't find one
