Default D7000 and kit lens question.

So I was here not too long ago and I was ready to buy a D90. I chickened out at the last second after playing around with a D7000 and a Canon 60D some more. I have saved up some more cash and am ready to buy.

First I would like to know if any of you would choose one over the other (D7000/60D).
The other thing question I have is a bout the kit lens. If I get the kit it comes out to $1,500. thing is that I can get a D7000 with a "Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor" instead of the kit "18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens" for an extra $150. Better deal? It says that the MSRP is $850. I have never bought glass before so I'm not sure.

Re 60D V 7000 - see this thread;

T3i vs. D3100 OR 60D vs. D7000

I am a canon shooter so I can't really help you about the kit lens.

I have a nikon D90 and a D7000. I learned the hard way the kit lenses are not to my liking but usable. I have one expensive lens nikon 70-200 mm f2.8 VRII that is a great lens for low light concerts I shoot and others where I need the zoom. Excellent quality for sure. I have a tamron 17-50mm f2.8 vr for landscapes, and great for group shots and portraits. I also have a tamron 60mm f2 with macro that is great for portraits and closeups. You will find the D90 and D7000 (an upgrade of D90) to be an excellent choice.

Where do you want to be with your photography in five years? Each line has strengths and weaknesses. What ever you get, buy the body and put the money into a better quality lens. I have known very few people that were happy with the kit lens (outside of the L kits) after six months.

I'm a Canon shooter, so you probably can guess the line that I would recommend

Oh, and save yourself some serious money and deal with these guys, I have spent thousands of dollars with them, and have nothing but good things to report.

Technically I think the Nikon is a more advanced camera but after handling both last night I am tossed. I actually prefer the handling of the 60D. Just playing around with both the Nikon missed focus twice in 10 minutes while the Canon hit it every time and was faster BUT the Canon only has 9 AF points compared to 39, plus metering, dual cards, mag boby etc. The D7000 really does offer more on paper but I would suggest renting both if you are serious. After handling both I am tossed and considering the 7D or it's replacement if sony doesn't come out with a winner in the A77.

As for the lens choice, I have not been happy with my kit lens but I would consider an 18-200 for those days when convenience is more important than anything else.

In essence you would be getting the 18-200mm for $450.00. That's a pretty good deal. It can be had from B&H for $639.00.

I have never used the 18-105mm lens, so I can't compare the two. I also don't know what your needs are in photography. I can tell you this. The 18-200mm is a fine all purpose lens. I use mine a lot & I mean a lot. I really have a hard time taking it off my camera. If I was a beginner, knowing what I know now, I would absolutely go for the 18-200mm lens. I think you'll be happy with your decision after a very short period of time.

Hi I have exactly the same problem...

I have been reading soooo many articles on the 18-200 and a dual kit lens (18-105 + 55-300). Lot's of people are complaining about CA and distortion on the 18-200 and some others complain about the lack of sharpness on almost the complete focal length. The big pro for this lens is versatility. you won't change lenses very often which means of course less chances in getting particles on your sensor but also less gear to carry around. Now I would like to know from a quality point of view which would be best 18-200 or kit lens, here in Australia the D7000 + 18-200 is $2200 AUD and the D7000 kit lens is $1870 AUD. Is a +$350 difference really worth it?

Sorry Dr, this might add some confusion but I personally think that quality goes above anything but that is just me? Anyone has any experience with these lenses?

The 18-200 is good as a versatile all-in-one, but for anything more discerning I really recommend against it.
