As far as I can tell, you can't get a wireless remote for the D3100. Strange considering that it's available on the D3000.

The ML-L3 remote won't work with the D3100?

Nope, the D3100 does not have the ability to work with an IR remote built into it. It's wired or apparently there are a few ebay type options of things you can plug in and then use for wireless.

I was looking hard at the D3100, but when I saw that it didnt have the remote it was a deal breaker for me. I've decided to save for the D7000 instead.

I asked about this at a photo store after I got my camera, they said that the D3100 does not have a wireless remote, only wired one. BUT you can buy something (can't remember what it was called, cost about $100) that you plug in, and then can use a wireless piece with it. I was rather disappointed as I just got a wireless remote about a month before I upgraded and was finding it very useful.

The wired cable from Nkon is called the MC-DC1 Remote Release Cord. Around $30.00. It's only one meter long and designed for releasing the shutter during long exposures, so you'll still have to run to get into a group shot!

If you were planning on going Strobist, anyway, just get some Cactus V5s or Yongnuo RF-602/603s. They also double as shutter remotes. You plug the receiver (or transceiver) into the cable release port, you use the transmitter (or transceiver) as your remote shutter button. The half-press works just like it would with a cable remote. AND, unlike the proprietary remotes, you don't have the line-of-sight and range issues you would with infrared.
