Default SB-900 or SB-700

I have a nikon d7000 and I want to get more into portrait photography. I am trying to decide what flash to get. Would the 900 or 700 be better? I want to do off camera shooting.

Any thoughts..pros/cons would be most welcome!

Nikon SB-700 Flash Specs vs SB-600 and SB-900 | Speedlights.net

Are you planning on doing any on-camera work with the flash? And what triggering system were you planning on using for off-camera work? Because if you're not using i-TTL capable triggers and you don't want to use the flash on-camera, too, you might be better off with a manual flash or monolight than a Nikon SB.

I am sure I would so some on camera work.

From what I read the nikon d7000 and both of those flashes work without anything else needed? I was reading something where you can set one to be a slave and the flash on camera worked as the master...

I am new to lighting..I mostly shoot concert photography where no flash allowed. So I am on a slow learning curve for using planned lighting.

That's correct: NIkon calls it the Creative Lighting System (CLS). It's wonderful.

Honestly, I'd be tempted to recommend you to see if you cant find some cheap SB-600s. Theyre a generation older but just as powerful as the SB-700. They lack a few features, but nothing you cant live without (nothing I've needed as yet at least).

I use an SB-800 (the predecessor to the 900) and two SB-600s as a portable studio and the whole system works great!

I use SB-900 with my Nikon D90 both on-camera and off-camera. It's great. But there is one thing that makes SB-700 really great are the two coloured filters to put in front of the strobe. One is for the tungsten lighting and the other is for fluorescent (not sure, though). Meanwhile, on the SB-900 all you get is gel holder and ordinary gels can get melt completely with a few strong flashes. I think you can't miss by choosing any of these two.

I got the 700 today. I could not do the extra money right now to get the 900. Only shot a few pictures and I love the 700 so far!

Thanks!
