i saw an ad for a slightly used (3 months) nikon D5000 for $520. thoughts?

Its a very nice camera, I have one in addition to my D300 and D700. It is Nikon's small form factor DSLR and like its other smaller bodies does not have a focus motor in the body. That should not be an issue if you use AF-S lenses (those with motors in the lens).

right now i just have a point and shoot, so i'm a bit out of my league. my dad has the D40 and it takes great shots. not so thrilled with mine lately... any suggestions of where to begin?

The D5000 is [kinda] like the replacement of the D40's replacement's replacement, but not really. Same level, better technical quality. If you like your dad's D40, then the D5000 won't be too different.
