Unhappy Help 18-55mm lens darkens at 35mm and won't shoot

Hi,
I've had my d40x a couple years now, love it but just yesterday I attempted some daytime outside photos and when I zoomed in to 35mm or closer the view darkened and wouldn't shoot/focus. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this or what the problem is? I'm a hobbyisy, no classes and no friends with camera knowledge so dumb down the terms if you can

Lighting doesn't seem to matter, dark or light it won't focus. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Christie

sounds like something with the aperture prong is slipping... It's odd though because its only happening at certain focal lengths. Did you try taking the lens off and putting it back on?
