IF money is an issue I really like my Sigma 12-24, not as fast as the Nikon, but about 1/2 to 1/3rd the price

thats my reccomendation, although, on a FF camera 24mm is still fairly wide dont you think? i used a 5Dmk2 +24-70 and it's crazy-wide @24mm.

Yeah, I love the 10.5 DX than the my 14-24. But wider than 14mm for portrait/wedding?

I agree the best wide angle for the d700 and portraiture is probably either the 24 1.4 or the 35 1.4 . The 24 1.4 is an excellent lens, beautiful bokeh at wide angle
Not the best photography, but here's a couple samples of the depth at, 2 and 1.4 respectively, It's plenty shallow http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...g?t=1295302637 http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...g?t=1295302690 14-24 is not a bad choice, it can be difficult to control the wide angular distortion with ultrawide and people though. 24 is already pretty wide with portraiture.
