Default Hacking camera system

Hi is there any software to hack compact cameras so that the shutter speed, aperture etc can be adjusted manually?

There is a software packaged called CHDK, but it only works on a selection of Canon cameras.

yeah saw that too.. i wonder if they can make for Nikon or Pentax..

I think if they could have been hacked, the hacks would exist by now. The CHDK is an odd confluence of events: the fact that the Canon P&S user base is large, has a large subgroup of computer geeks who knew they could get RAW out of their cameras, and that the DIGIC processor has an OS that's hackable are all key elements. Nikon, iirc, tries to encrypt implementation details, and the Pentax P&S user base probably doesn't include enough firmware programming geeks. Since both of those cameras use completely different processors, it's not as if the work on the CHDK can be leveraged for them.
