As much as it pains me to send anyone to Ken Rockwell, his review looks to have covered the pluses and minuses pretty well. I don't agree with his conclusion, but the rest seems pretty spot on.
I started with a D60, and my main gripes were the lack of a second command dial on the front, no Commander mode with the built-in flash, horrible performance above ISO200, only 3 AF points, and having to dive into camera menus for just about everything. From the sounds of it, the D3100 added 11-point AF, and better performance at higher ISOs, Live View/video, and a dedicated switch for the release mode. For me, the lack of Commander mode and a second command dial kill the deal still. Also looks like you have to go into the menus still to change the ISO; I hate auto-ISO, so that would be a real PITA to me. Also, the 230k-pixel screen is a night-and-day downgrade from the 920k-pixel screen of the D90, etc. And of course, no AF with anything but AF-S (or AF-I) lenses. For the $640 I see it selling for, I'd go for a used D90, and pick up my choice of lens. The D90 gives you the better screen, MUCH easier controls, the ability to fire remote flashes with the built-in flash, and use cheaper AF lenses. |

Finally when i made my decision of buying the D3100 i was shocked when i heard that it does not contain a Flash Commander ..... so i thinking about the D90 as it also better in High ISOs performance !! and i can buy it used and get good glass instead if buying it new !! )

Its got a few new bells and whistles, but still lacks the basics that are essential to me. I'd even prefer a D80 to the 3100.

Creative Lighting System Technology
It allows you to use SB-600 (or better) flashes remotely, by using either an SB-700/800/900 flash, SU-800, or the built-in flash (with a D70/80/90/7k or D200/200/700) to control it/them. Being able to do it with the built-in is handy because it saves you a) having to buy a $300+ flash as well as another flash to be the remote slave, and b) having to have that flash mounted whenever you want to use a remote flash. |
