Default Used D40 body with "metering problem" for $50 - worth it?

A local classifieds site has a "2-year-old" D40 body listed with a "metering problem" for $50. I've inquired about what the specific problem is and am waiting for a response.

Just wondering if anyone here had had any metering problems with their D40's, and if it would be worth either a) working around the metering issue, or b) sending it in for repair.

I noted the seller of the body is also separately selling an "AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 18-55 mm" lens for $120 (claiming it is worth $200 plus tax). Quick check around local camera shops online stores do not support the seller's claim.

However, when I was searching Nikon's website regarding repairs, I found an article about a camera constantly over- or under-exposing pictures, and one of the problems listed was a bent contact as a result of the lens not being attached properly.

Since money is tight right now, this would be a great deal for me to get a "starter" DSLR so I can start re-learning all about focus, aperature, etc.

Thoughts and comments appreciated, with caveat emptor being understood.

Thanks in advance.

Look at it this way. People didn't have metering system in the camera back then, and they were still able to produce nice pictures. Don't get me wrong here, I cannot live without my metering but I mean for 50$, it's worth trying imo.

The 18-55 VRII is sold brand new here in Canada for 125$....

Not sure I would trust this seller. Just keep in mind you might throw your 50$ through the window...

as long as the camera worked fine in manual in might be fine. I wouldn't invest the money to get it fixed just shoot in manual and chimp the shot and/or histogram to check exposure.

As for the lens, I wouldn't pay that much for the 18-55mm. I'd get the 35mm instead. It's a pretty sweet lens- almost never leaves my body.

$50 would be a steal for a D40 in almost any condition. If the sensor and LCD are still good you could more than make your money back selling it for parts. The focus screen alone goes for ~$20, and that's one of the cheapest parts of the camera.

Then what do you call $12 for a brand new D40 + 18-55mm + 55-200mm + 2 batteries + memory card + carrying case?

Thanks for all the replies, folks.

I kind of figured the metering wasn't a required aspect, but wanted to be sure. I don't mind working in manual-only as it will probably only help me improve my skills.

As for the lens, well, armed with current pricing for newer lenses, hopefully the seller will be reasonable.

I guess we'll see what happens if/when the seller replies.

Thanks again for the input and feedback.

close enough. Alternatively, "eBay screwup" works too.
