Default D80 Upgrade: D300s, D700 or D7000?

Hi everyone,

I've got a D80, and I'm planning an upgrade in the next month or so. All along, I was planning on bouncing on a D300s, or possibly even the D700. I came to the forum this evening to see if I could figure out whether or not to go full frame, or stay DX. I have yet to establish that, even :P

Then I came here this evening and saw all this talk about the D7000. Some people have gone so far as to say that they wouldn't even consider the D300s now that the D7000 has landed.

So please guys, go ahead and advise me! I'm not sure how I should do this. If I should go with something like the D700, I'm okay to save up a little longer and do that, but I don't want to if I don't need to.

Thanks for all the help!

d80 has a good sensor. - maybe not best for low light, but it`s great at the lower ISO settings. I suspect, that it`d be worth going to a d7000 or waiting for d300 replacement. Depending on if you want to move up in camera class/body class or not.

There`s enough difference between d80 and d300 to make that a nice jump - future jumps will have fewer and fewer differences. If budget and time allow - I`d wait for the d400 - (I like the camera body features alot more) If you`re happy with the body - d7000 appears to offer more room to grow than the d300 (sensor)

D700: What's your lens situation like? Do you have many full frame/35mm lenses or would you need to replace your entire arsenal if you went FX?

D7000 or D300s: The D7000 is the better camera of the two. Unless you need the weather sealing or the higher framerate of the 300s, go with the D7000. If you can wait that long, the D400 is due next fall.

Unless you NEED the FX sensor, I cant recommend the D700. For 90% of users, its not too much expense. THe body is expensive, but so are all those FX lenses.

As for the D300s/D7000 conundrum: it really depends on what you shoot.

My lens collection is actually pretty insignificant, so that's not an issue at the moment. I've got my very first lens, 18-135, and a 50mm 1.8 that I bought last year. I'll be buying a 24-70 along with my new body.

The body construction, the adjustments in the physical controls and other non sensor based internal changes are quite important, I think.

In terms of IQ and the technology, the D7000 is the better imager.

In terms of functionality and usability, the D300 is the better body.

Like I said before, if you have time and really want the D300, wait for the D400. What's a year +/- 2 months, right?

That's the thing - I don't have that sort of time. I need to buy this camera in the next month.

So which is it, guys? :P D300s or D7000?

95% of what I shoot is people related - couples, weddings, fashion, etc.
