Default So i get my Nikon 1.8, 50mm.....

And lucky me... it doesn't autofocus with my d5000.
I knew this when i bought it, but it has an infocus indicator in the viewfinder, and i thought that would be enough. Well its not. Not when I have a wiggly 10 month old who is ALWAYS on the move. Any tips on how I can get a crisp shot, or DOES THE 35mm 1.8 AUTOFOCUS WITH THE d5000?

[edit]ok so since i found out the 35mm doesn't autofocus with my body... im just gonna keep my 50mm. Any tips on getting the shot is appreciated. BUT if anyone knows whats going on here... please let me know? Is it malfunctioning?: [/edit]

Another thing about this lens... i dont think the shutter is working properly when hooked up with my cactus and flash. When i go above 1/250... the bottom part of the picture has a heavy black gradient. The gradient gets higher and higher (from middle to top of the shot) when i increase the shutter speed. what is going on???

Again.. your input is appreciated!!

The AF-S 35mm f/1.8 would autofocus on the Nikon models without autofocus motors such as your D5000. There's also an AF-S 50mm f/1.4 lens, but that one's more expensive because of the wider aperture.

With your flash issue, it's a sync-speed issue. Your camera won't synchronize below 1/200 if memory serves me right.

thankyou for the info. should i stick with the 50mm, or go with the 35mm? I know the answer but is there an advantage of it being 50mm rather than 35? I know 50mm is like actual size or something....

I would return the 50mm and get the 35mm. And no there's nothing special about 50mm. It's just a focal length.

The 35mm will have a wider field of view than the 50mm.

35mm on your camera will give you the field of view that is equal to 52.5mm(50mm) on a 35mm camera.
The 50mm will geive you the same field of view that is equal to 75mm on a 35mm camera.

Your flash sync speed is good up to 1/200.
The blackness you are seeing is the shutter curtain closing because your flash is firing too late.

Yes, the 35 does, and false, the 35 will. I love the 35mm on my D40- it's great. 95% of the time, it's on the body.

THat's because you're going past the sync speed. The D5000 has a sync speed of 1/200 seconds and if you go any faster, the flash won't be firing during the whole time the curtain is open to expose the scene.

Any lens that is labelled AF-S will autofocus on your camera. AF lenses will not.
