Default My new Nikon D90

I just bought a D90 and every thing is a little over exposed. I did some test shots and gave the camera a tune-up in "fine tune optimal exposure". Bumped down matrix and center-weighted 2/6 and spot 1/6. Things look great now. Took some pictures at a roping event during mid day. Slightly back lit. The shadows came out under exposed and the sky was over exposed on some photos. Others looked great. The only thing left on auto was W/B and I did not use Active D Lighting. My D70 works so well on auto W/B I rarely take it off. Any input for the D90 on camera set up and Active D would be nice.
Thanks to all!
Gene

I always leave Active D-Lighting on Auto, it generally gives excellent results IMO.
