Default Zoom lens?

I'm looking hard for a short zoom lens for FX, since I use prime lenses I would like the versatility of a zoom for indoor shooting. I'm considering the 24-70mm f/2.8G lens, but am open to other suggestions if anyone has any. I may use the lens occasionally for landscape or even a few portraits, but I shoot so few of those I can use a prime lens if I need to.
Any other suggestions that I should look into before ordering this lens?

If you have the change to test out a Tamron 28-75/2.8 is a good lens for the money, a fourth of what the Nikon costs and as far as image quality goes there is really not much difference.

The Tamron is a bit on the slow focusing side, but for portraits and landscape is not a tremendous loss. Also is plastic built and not metal but does have a metal mount.

A quick sample, haven't got too much time to play with it, been too busy lately.

Can't go wrong with the 24-70...but for what you are talking about using it for I like my Sigma 12-24.....I find the wide angle look is better for adding interest in many images. (Or if you want to spend a lot more for a little more/less, the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8)

I'd second the 12-24, but keep in mind that if you want to use filters (for landscapes), you'll also need to invest in a Lee filter system.

Thanks guys, I'll look around and see if anyone I know has these lenses so I can test them. I've got a few months before I'll be needing a different lens, I'd just like to have an fx version of a kit lens, (well fast of course) to shoot at family events and such.

if you just want an fx version of a kit lens - and want to be really cheap - take a look at the very plasticy, Nikon 28-80g I got it as a kit with my nikon n80 - and it`s not bad, has some foibles, but can produce very nice images.

Just get the 24-70, especially if you need it to work indoors. If you have the money you can't really do better.
