Talking can somebody help me? :-D

Hello everybody. I still new in this photographic world looking for my first DSLR camera and I need you all advice here. I actually had decided to buy the Nikon D3000 but my friend used Canon EOS 1000D. The Canon EOS 1000D picture and quality were so awesome and make me jealous with my friend. So I make a survey for the specification, features and all the information I get from the internet sources. I have made a comparison but still need expert and experience user to guide me. I had decided on the D3000 or EOS 1000D for financial reasons as it was in my price range. So to not waste our time, what camera should I buy between Nikon D3000 and Canon EOS 1000D? Most importantly what is the advantage and disadvantage for both cameras? I hope that I will get a good feedback from you all. All the information and advice is much appreciated. Thank you for your cooperation.

buy the one that feels bet in your hands...where your fingers feel comfortable reaching the controls...the one that when you bring it too your eye seems the most natural to hold. Either would be a good choice when it comes to features and specs.

I am a D5000 shooter from last one year. But as kidbfg said that I am also jealous about the quality produced by Canon.

There is a limitation in Canon entry level. I haven't found any focus guide light for low light situation (but it may have some other technology). It is available at higher models, but I haven't checked too much (because presently I am comfort with Nikon). One major thing I found that maximum bird photographers use Canons. It may be the more reach in their lens, but one thing I observed in India that Canon equipments are more costly then Nikon.

But I like to use Nikon, because I feel comfort in hand when holding Nikon then Canon. The menu system I feel comfort with Nikon. My final conclusion is that if I am not comfort with my equipments then what is the benefit if it gives me much more better quality pictures. I can't work with the equipment which is not comfort for me.

So, kidbfg please purchase the Camera which you feel comfort.

The main advantage the 1000D will have over the D3000 is that there's no focus motor issue. All Canon EOS-mount lenses will autofocus on a 1000D. On a D3000, only Nikon lenses equipped with AF-S (or third party lenses with a built-in focus motor) will autofocus.

This isn't a huge deal if you shoot subjects that don't move (posed portraits, buildings, landscapes, etc.), but can be a huge deal if you shoot fast action (sports, wildlife), and need to focus very very quickly.

The main thing to consider is that Canon and Nikon are two different mount systems. Once you buy the body, you're more or less locked into that system. If your friend shoots Canon and you shoot Nikon, you can't share/borrow/loan your lenses to each other.

Whichever one you choose, though, you'll be getting a good basic entry-level dSLR body.

The XS/1000D has a focus assist lamp in the pop-up flash, just like the D3000 does, if this is what you're talking about.

Two things the Canon has the D3000 doesn't, however, are a depth of field preview button, and true mirror lock-up capability. These are nice-to-have-features, but not enough to sway a decision one way or the other. And if you use old manual-focus Nikon lenses, while they can be used without adapting on a Nikon body, if you use an adapter ring, they can be mounted onto an XS and you'll retain metering capability--the D3000 won't.

Here in the US, Canon superteles (lenses that are 400mm or longer) tend to be cheaper than Nikon equivalents. For example, Canon makes a $1200 EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens. They also make a $6000 400mm f/4, and a $7000 400mm f/2.8. Nikon does not. Their only 400mm prime is an f/2.8 lens, and much much more expensive (about $8500). Nikon and Canon both make 100-400 slow stabilized telephoto zooms, but the Nikon version is not AF-S. while the Canon one is USM.

You can still do bird photography on the Nikon side, but you either pay more or you're going third-party with your lenses (typically Sigma).

On the flip side, Nikon's wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses tend to offer more selections and be higher quality than Canon's. So, there's a generalization out there that if you like to shoot telephoto, Canon's stronger, but if you like to shoot wide angle Nikon's better. But honestly, this sort of distinction mostly counts only at the $1000+ lens level.
