Why does it say it's not compatable with dslr cameras? I have a Nikon d5000 and a sb-600 speedlight. My camera doesn't have a built in commander. Does it say its "not compatable" because because it's for the speedlight? But doesn't the camera send a signal to the slave when the shutter is pressed? Im confused. I just need to know if the su4 will work with my camera.

You can't expect an answer in 4 hours. Those 14 people may not have the answers you seek.
Just be patient. According to my research (mainly looking at info on the Nikon site) it is not compatible with the sb-600. The site suggests it is only for the sb-900. The unit affixes to the bottom of an external flash, thereby turning it into a slave flash, and is triggered by detecting the light from the flash on the camera (the master). As far as I can tell from D-SLR and Nikon Speedlight Compatibility then the camera isn't compatible either. I'd like someone with a bit more knowledge to corroborate all this though.

But you wouldn't need the su-4 to do it as the sb-600 has the ability built in.
You may be looking at something like http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Ni...mote-Cord.html You may also want to read http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/ittlslave.htm To do it wirelessly you may need another external flash because the in-built one won't work to control another flash wirelessly. In case I'm wrong you could try it with the in-built flash but according to Mr Rockwell this won't work http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5000.htm

Ok I just had a look through the manual again and to do this wirelessly you'll need an SU-800 controller.
"The SU-800 wireless speedlight commander: When mounted on a CLS-compatible camera, the SU-800 can be used as a commander for remote SB-900, SB-800, SB- 600, or SB-R200 flash units. The SU-800 itself is not equipped with a flash." http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Ni...ctTabs.Cameras I'm not sure but is the wireless remote you're talking about the one used to remotely click the shutter?

Why don't you just get a cheap-o remote kit off ebay? I mean, if I'm understanding you correctly, you just want to use your SB-600 off camera. You can pick one up on ebay for about $20...

Like one of these: Wireless Radio Remote 2-Flash Slave Trigger Receiver Kit (Supports Upto 2 Flashes) [E3565] : BestOfferBuy.com, Buy DVD, Shop for PC accessories, Discount MP3 Players, Bargain Deal for Surveillance Equipment, Cheap R4 for NDS, X-sim Unlock
Like the remote cord...without the cord of course. So to sum up: Su-4 is no good for you. If you just want to get the flash off your camera then get a remote cord or wireless system. (1 flash cheap option) If you want to utilise the i-TTL system, with the possibility of multiple flash units, get the su-800 controller or a second speed-light to stay on the camera. (multiple flash expensive option).
