Default Nikon D300 vs Canon 7D

I already own a DX 40 with 18-200mm & 18-55mm lens & will be soon acquire 20mm wide angle lens.
I intend to upgrade my DX 40. I have not used a Canon before. Which camera gives better performance a D300/S or Canon 7D

..they have very similar High ISO capabilities.

the 7D does full HD video, the D300s only does 720p (personally never use the video function)
the D300s has Dual Card slots.... the 7D doesnt
7D does 8fps @18megapixels...the D300s does 7fps @ 12.1megapixels

check them out side by side here....
Buying Guide: Side-by-side: Digital Photography Review

the D300s has a far better Autofocus system..

all that aside.. you already have Nikon glass. i think its silly to switch.. but its your call.

i dont like the Canon controls with the scroll wheel above the shutter release...
others dont like the Nikon controls.. (the ISO and WB buttons are in a funny place on the D300s)

go test it out in store and see what you like best.

if i was a canon shooter i'd probably have bought a 7D... its a good camera and i think you'd be happy either way.

You have Nikon glass. Are you unhappy with it?
Nikon D300S, dynamic range. You would, coming from Nikon, find it much more user friendly.
At this point, you might wait for the D90 replacement. If there is one, it should be announced by nest week. It may be called the D7000. The ISO sensitivity is supposed to be amazing!

I would opt for the D300 for all the reasons mentioned and because, you can use any Nikon lens on these, even old film lenses.

D7000, D300 is a waste of money. Either move up to the D700 or down with with the D90. The D7000 will be out pretty soon which will be the new top DX camera for Nikon.

I agree with you about the D700. I own one and think it's the greatest. But that's a different format. He would have to start over again with glass. The 18-200mm DX is pretty good glass if you use it properly.
If the D7000, or whatever it's called, is issued, why would that be a waste of money?
Most of the older ai lenses will work on the newer cameras. I just tried some of them on my wife's D5000.

Sorry, I meant to get the D7000 and that the D300 is a waste of money.

I own the D700, and I kept and still use my D300, and is is not a waste of money. When newer technology is introduced, the older stuff doesn't just die. I believe if you decided on the D300s, it would fill all of your needs......

So you would get the D300 over the new D7000 which is going to be better and cheaper?
