Default D3100

I am looking to buy my first DSLR. I currently have a Kodak Z1012 IS. It is a decent camera but I am hoping to shoot a wedding next year and am looking for a decent sub $1,000 DSLR. I have been tossing between Canon or Nikon. And I considered a Nikon D90. But then I was at Nikon's website and noticed the new D3100. Any thoughts on this? it is 14MP with is 2MP higher than the D90 and 4 higher than my current camera.

How does this sound? Any comments or feedback are highly welcomed.

i'll be honest here. If you're looking to shoot a wedding, $1k isn't enough. Gear doesn't matter, yes, but weddings you can't call the couple and tell them you need to do a reshoot.

recommended (not required, but it's something like common practice) lenses alone will run over $3k. (24-70 and 70-200mm f/2.8)

Thank you for your feedback. However, this is going to be a low key wedding and I doubt that I will be getting much money out of the wedding. Friend of my wife.

Is this a good camera for:
1) First time SLR camera
2) Decent for all around shooting, macro, landscape, and some weddings.

Thanks,
Aaron

If you've got the time to wait, there's a big photography trade show next month where new models get announced. You might want to see if there are other new models coming out that would be better suited to your needs than the 3100.

#1: yeah. there's the possibility that you may grow out of it pretty quickly (I started feeling that way about my D40 about 9 months in, but I still use it as my primary 'cause I'm cheap.). As I'm sure you already know, the D3100 doesn't have the focus motor built in, so you'll have to have AF-S lenses (or equivalent from 3rd parties). It lacks other features that you may need at a wedding, like commander mode for the flash. It's your basic, entry-level dSLR.

#2: Cameras don't determine that. Lenses do.

You don't buy a camera to get an extra two megapixel. You can take great photos with only 6mp. This camera is a good upgrade from a D3000 or maybe even a D5000, but it does not offer many of the features the D90 has.

D3100 = entry level.
D90 = serious amateur.

You might want to wait a bit though. There is many rumours around about a new body comming soon and both the D90 and the D700 are due for an upgrade. We just don't know which one will be upgraded hehehe... maybe both !!!

Where and when is this Photography trade show going to be?

@All...thanks for your feedback. I think I will be looking into the D90 or its upgraded model as the DSLR to buy.

Every 2 years. Which happily coincides with the bulk of most companies announcement calendars...
