IABoomer said it perfect. I paid $629 for my D5000 kit (with a friend's Wal-Mart discount)...and this camera is coming out at the same price? I would much rather have bought the D5000 as it has a lot of the features of the D90. I think Nikon just took DSLR photography out of reach of a lot of people since they also discontinued the D40. How can someone get in to the game for less money???? Buy a Canon I guess!?!?

So does this mean Nikon isn't releasing a replacement for the D90?

I think Nikon made their homeworks. I don't beleive they are getting wrong with this. They are now offering a entry level camera that can also shoot full HD movies. The price on DPReview is an approximation. On Nikon.ca they are suggesting 570$ for this new body and usualy we can find it cheaper than what Nikon is suggesting for most of their product.
Couple years ago this was what we were paying for a good point and shot. Hence, I paid 450$ for my Sony DCS-W5 (5mp, ISO 400) in 2004 hehehe. The D3000 was 550$ (that's what Nikon.ca was suggesting) when it can out. Like most people are saying, go for Canon or Nikon depending how the camera feel in your hand. Unless you are looking for something very specific, the differences are minimal when you stay in the same categories. To get HD video with Canon you have to go with the T1i (not the same category). Keep in mind this body is targeting the general population who are not looking for technical stuff. Power on, press the shutter, enjoy with the family. I think it's a nice addition to the Nikon products and a product that will meet most family needs in a single device.

I think my issue with this is, feature-wise and spec-wise, this camera seems much closer to the D5000 than the D3000. Bring in the couple features that the D5000 has, call this the D5100 and keep the D3000 as the entry level "just take pictures" camera to get people into Nikon shooting.
The entry level Canon XS doesn't bother with video at all. You have to move up a bit in the line to get the T1i (now the T2i I guess) if you want to shoot video. For people who are used to spending $150-300 for a P&S/bridge camera, that jump to $500 for a dSLR isn't insignificant. $700 might as well be $7000. |

No. There are going to be a number of press rounds up until Photokina as we go. Canon's first round (same day) was all about point and shoots (S95, SD4100, etc.), [although, I'm weirded out that the expected G12 announcement wasn't there.] They don't dump out all the news at once. It won't be over until Photokina actually begins (late September).
