Compatible yes, worth spending money on - No.

I tried one a while back with my Nikon 70-300VR and found that I could just crop in and enlarge the image taken with the lens itself and it was as good if not better than the one with the TC.

What kirbinster said. I had very much the same experience - the 70-300 and the Kenko/Tamron TC do not work well together. The 300 f/4 prime and the Kenko do work well together, but that's another story.

Thank you Kirbinster and Aegea. The reason why I ask this is first: Kenko is much cheaper TC than nikon TCs, second: Using my 70-300mm lens alone I couldn't get a perfect big size of the moon so i'm just wondering about using 2X zoom to get it right.
Any other ideas? sorry guys i'm just a newbie in photography

The Nikon TC will NOT work with the 70-300VR lens - the lens will hit the converter - don't even try it!

I don't think there's an easy, cheap and good way of going longer with the 70-300. I eventually sold mine, now I have a used 300 f/4 AF (not AF-S) and the Tamron 1.4x TC, which I find to be much better.

do you find it large when zooming the moon using your tamron 1.4x TC?

Bigger, but did not fill the frame by any means. Take a look at Half Moon | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

That was taken with the 300 and the 1.4x (the EXIF still says 300 because the TC doesn't report the corrected FL to the camera). Cropped down to about 1330 pixels.
