but I have to ask, please keep in mind I am just an amateur photographer and still have a lot to learn....
I have a D40, 18-55, 55-200, 50mm lenses. If I want to upgrade my camera, am I stuck with Nikon? Can I not use the lenses I have with another brand? or even with same brand but different models? Do they not work with all Nikon models? |

Nikon lenses will only fit Nikon.. unless you want to start buying adapters and modifying the lens mounts. (that hurts my brain) but others do it fairly regularly.
my sugestion.. just buy a Nikon body.. and save yourself the pain. D5000 and D90 are good bodies to upgrade to. those lenses will work on any Nikon body.. (in full frame bodies your zoom lenses will only rendr a portion of the frame, but they will work)

If you want to keep those lenses at full functionality, you are pretty much stuck with Nikon bodies (OK, and Fuji). You can get adapters for other bodies (e.g., Canon), but I believe you will lose autofocus and/or auto metering. However, your lenses will work with most any recent Nikon body.
