Default Should I wait before buying?

Hi Everyone,

First and mostly - HI :P
I'm new here (on the forums, at least), been following the website for some time.

I've owned some P&S cameras before, I had an old Zenit SLR, and I played with a D5000 for about 2 weeks, but had to sell it after that.

For the last couple of months I was saving for a D90, and I'm pretty much ready to buy it, but a new thought just came.

From what I read, Nikon should be announcing new camera models soon, possibly in September. If they announce a D90 replacement, it's most likely that the price for existing cameras will fall, so the question is: should I wait a month or two and hope for a price drop, or am I mistaken, and I won't save anything?

You can always wait... something better, or cheaper will always come along. The D90 has just recently gone through a price drop, and I would expect the "new" model to be released at the old price. Bottom line is do you want to take pictures now or later. If you wait 3 more months, you can get a new one used.... another 3 months and a used d90 will be $300, another 3 months and they will have to pay you.

Scott got it dead on. You could wait forever if you always want to get the newest gear, because digital cameras are being released and updated constantly. It's probably worth waiting a little while if an upgrade is imminent, but otherwise, but when you need the gear!

Let me know when I can pick up my camera and my check!

I want a D90 as well, but I will probably wait another couple of months.

I don't know..Here in the UK I didn't see any price drop at all :S
It seems that the price only increased a little, since I last checked in April!

And I wasn't really waiting for the new models (unless they have something INCREDIBLY awesome :P ), just hoping the price would drop slightly when it's announced, but it seems that it has already dropped.. only not here

*loud sigh*

Talked to some guys in stores here, and they told me the following:
1) The price raised a bit because of lower stock levels in Europe, following some production problems. So this is basically a supply/demand issue.
2) Overall, the price has dropped for the D90 (as well as other cams), esp since it was released. When the new model will be released, it will have the old, high price of the D90, but the current models will not drop the price.

So, the baseline is: if you want to buy a camera, and you know what model you want - go get it. If you want to wait until the new models are released, and weight the new functionality vs current models, then you'll be waiting for them anyway :P
But there's no price drop, as far as I can see

Actually, I think it's the day after tomorrow. Nikon has press conferences set for the 19th.

Actually, no. The prices have been falling all along. The announcement of a new model probably won't accelerate the price decline. They're not going to fall off a cliff. Where you are going to see prices changing is in the used market, as suddenly a bunch of folks feel their current camera isn't good enough and grab the D95 (or whatever it's going to be called) and then put their old cameras up for sale. You may not find a cheaper used D90 right away, but they will become more plentiful, and after a bit, that supply will drive the price down. But you're not suddenly going to see a $300 dip in the price.

Waiting any amount of time typically sees a price drop. But it's nearly always pretty gradual. Just my observation. The D90, when it was introduced, was priced (body only) at $999.
