Default 35mm or 50mm

I have a D40 and debating whether to buy the 50mm f1.4 or the 35mm f1.8. I want to use this lense mostly for indoor infant photography. What do you suggest?

Does anyone have any indoor infant photos photographed with a 35mm?

the 50 can get a bit tight indoors on a DX body; I have the 35mm and absolutely love it. The 50 does focus more accurately, at the expense of speed.

on APS-C cameras
50mm = around a 85mm equivalent
35mm = around a 50mm equivalent
Not exact but close

Go with the 35mm

The 50mm primes aren't AF-S compatible, so you won't be able to auto-focus them on your D40. The 35mm is AF-S, so it will auto-focus. Just something else to keep in mind, along with the above suggestions.

Actually the newer 50mm f/1.4 is AF-S, so you'd be OK. But on the D40, I'd highly recommend the 35mm also. It's fast, and wide enough to be useful. I own it and love it!
