Default 70-200mm f2.8 - Tamron or sigma

hello

i would want to ask for opinions regarding the two lenses mentioned in the title.

which is better and why?

also, i checked their respective websites, sigma has incorporated their OS into their 70-200mm f2.8.. wonder if tamron would do the same.. anybody have a feed on this?

thanks

it'll be a big help

mike

I guess it depends on what you're going to use it for.

Personally I went for the Sigma (pre image stabilised version) because of the HSM which gives noticeably faster AF than the Tamron.
Some reviews I read suggested that the Tamron has better quality optics but, as I wanted it for shooting sports, the slow and not so reliable AF ruled it out as an option. That said I have been very pleased with the IQ from my lens, but it will be a long time before I am good enough to be blaming the quality of the lens for disappointing shots. I did also read that some people had had a problem with front focusing which had to be sorted out at a service centre, I cannot comment as I have had no such problems.

If your looking at the image stabilised version, how much more is the Nikon version? I don't really know about Nikon as I shoot Canon but for the small difference in price I would have gone with the Canon (if I could've afforded the extra for the IS version )

haha..i can relate with that.. but i hope to keep the glass for a long time so im also hoping to get the best quality at my budget.

the nikon glass is around Php 100,000..thats around USD2200. i checked sigma's website and they listed it at USD2400 for the one with OS.. i dont know if they have updated their site.

about the use, ill be using it more on people.

wish they have one that's without the AF motor..so i could use the D90's built in motor.

thanks for the quick reply sir, appreciate your feedback

mike

From a purely image quality standpoint, the Tamron wins hands down, but the Sigma has the HSM (faster AF), and is built to a higher standard. Of course, with either, you could be subject to poor sample variation.

OP... you could get a used (maybe even new) 80-200 f.2.8 AF-S for a relativley similar price

i've used one for a couple hours... beautiful lens even wide open.

would you be so kind as to post a few examples of it when shot wide open?
would be interesting to see.. i've prettymuch decided on the nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D
but a comparison would be great.

my sigma24-70 wide open is pretty horrible. its "ok" but still softer then a kit lens when wide open. unuseable In many cases though.
i have to go down to f/3.6 - f/4 to get the entire frame sharp.

I can't post any of my shots today as I am at work but have a look at "this link on POTN" which is a thread dedicated to images from this lens.
A point of note is that the new Sigma with OS has been improved optically as well so there should be an improvement in the IQ as well. I have yet to see any shots with this lens though so will wait until I see some "user" reviews to form an opinion.

Sir, I am from India and using Nikon products (Canons are not popular and also costlier then Nikon). The image quality from your link are great. Will we get same quality in Nikon also. Please do not lough in my silly question, I have no Idea about this and not getting any links to clarify my doubt.

Thanking you
Pranab

I certainly wouldn't laugh as it is not a silly question in my opinion. Unfortunately I cannot give you a definitive answer as I have never used Nikon lenses as I shoot with a Canon system. From what I have heard/read the quality of lens that Nikon produce is very good so I can only assume that you should be able to get the same or better quality from using a Nikon system (but it would be better if a Nikon user answered your question).

I have the Sigma on a Nikon. I am at work, so I do not have any images to post for you. At 2.8, I do find it a little soft, by 4 it is a sharp lens. All the pictures taken at this parade Event | Captures by McQuillin were shot on that lens. Non of them are wide open, but it gives you an idea of image quality with a sigma 70-200 f2.8 on a nikon body.

Edit - On the second page are some pictures of the lettermen at a concert, which was pretty low light. I still don't think I was wide open, but I would have been f4 or under for those.

Here you go.... I used the sigma 70-200 f2.8 on a nikon D90 and snapped this tonight of my wife at 2.8 so you could see the results. I actually like this, so I am probably going to post it is SYS as well.
